SS: The artwork on your new record looks like a UK/European doom metal vinyl LP. You can put it in between Reverend Bizarre and Electric Wizard. How did you pick the artwork and the album title Coffin Syrup for your new record?
G: …Well, I’d like to say if I may… Coffin Syrup is a mixtape really it’s not a new album, there are some things that have not been in circulation, some stuff is pretty rare on it also, but the new album will be under SUPERCOVEN. It should be out in Early February 2011.
I agree with the Rev/Wizard look, I like both of those bands, actually, the new Wizard kills. I was looking through some vintage Swedish occult newspaper/fanzine and I saw it. I like to collect odd things from different countries. A habit.
When I was real little I was in Mexico visiting my dad, we had went to the supermarket there and there was a huge display circle in the middle of the store filled with rock shirts. Most were bootlegged but I stocked up something awful since everything at that time was dirt cheap, I bought like 25 shirts for $10 bucks. Kiss, Maiden, Scorpions, Judas Priest… They used to sell rare Kiss poster packs there also, very weird… You’d be bringing up your food to the checkout line and right in front would be a super rare Kiss thing, maybe some single from “Dynasty” or something. I should’ve bought all 200 I’d have made some loot.
SS: You’re currently in the West Coast right? Has it influenced your songs in any way? Do you miss NYC?
G: It’s hard to keep up I suppose but no I’m back in New York now… Back to the gritty filthy bile hole. I’ve traveled a lot in the last few years, it’s something that keeps me fresh and helps keep my outlook on life tolerable. If I had to sit in the projects my whole life selling weed on the corner to buy sandwiches, I wouldn’t make it. NY keeps me grimy and hungry, as much as sometimes I hear myself saying I’m sick of NY, it’s a feeling that never leaves you, sort of like that Billy Joel song, you have to live it to really get it. I would say I def make more evil music in NY. In Cali everyone is uncharacteristically laid back, it goes hand in hand with the weather. I love Cali too for different reasons, more of the history… The blondes are dumber also which is rad.

SS: Supercoven is on MySpace, who runs your music page there?
G: What is MySpace? haha…
Actually, yeah a good friend of mine runs it but it’s not the same anymore. I’ve had 5 pages on MySpace and ALL of them have been mysteriously deleted, with no reasons why, ever. I had over 2 million plays and 85,000 “friends”, who cares really… I despise the internet really, all aspects… But it’s fairly obvious someone or a few persons at MySpace have had it in for me since 2005. Now I don’t really give a shit about any of that. I have a page up, it’s there… It’s fairly dead. If you’re a true supporter you will buy my album, if you want to wack off on free songs on my player, that’s not keeping it real. If you want some tunes it’s there but it’s nothing I pay attention to. It’s OK for music and bands but for me putting in any work on that is surely a waste of time. I’d like to know who at myspace has the issue with me.
SS: have you had any fans who are Masons? What do they think of your lyrics about secret societies and secret occult shit?
G: Well, that depends there are quite a variety of masons really. A lot of people I think get confused what’s behind it. The old-school masons were involved in some rituals, but some are just some fat plumbers, who joined some friends and drink beer at the bar and wear their “fez”… More of a fraternity vibe. I haven’t really had any odd situations, not many admitted masons approach me, back in 1999 though, Non Phixion were doing a show in Boston I think, somewhere and some guy saw one of our older stickers, the “I Shot Reagan” sticker with the swords and he got all bent out of shape. He thought we were perpetrating but I had to let him know we’re not schmucks and everything we did at that time was a conscious decision. We actually did a lot of research and spent time theorizing it, not just using it as a trendy motive to attract fans or fit in. I think still, most don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about. When I’m dead, you will get it.
SS: metal plays a huge part in your lyrics and the soul of the music. What do you think of the newer crop of metal bands these days compared to the older more obscure bands in the 80’s – late 90’s?
G: It depends really. I see a lot of newer bands doing a mishmosh of every style conceivable and making something new out of it. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. The feeling of the old days is gone and can’t come back, even though everyone is trying. I don’t want to say the internet ruined everything, but kinda lol… Nowadays, a kid can buy his way into it in a week… He orders all his “rare’ metal shirts and CDs with mommy’s credit card, if he’s buying CDs. He can go to tons of websites and find out everything it took someone 6 years to build. he can troll all the websites for up-to-date news.
When Cliff Burton died, there was no internet. You had to find out first hand or maybe a rare metal show on the radio would tell you. Things felt more real and heartfelt then. There were way less bands around, and you could actually keep track of who’s who. No one did it for cash then really, the heart of the music was intact. People traded tapes, people wrote LETTERS, with a pen and paper. There was trust. You would see a demo tape for sale perhaps a Mercyless demo, or Carnage… You didn’t even know these guys or anything and you would be sending cash in the mail to them. Mostly everyone was honest.
I’d stay home from school to collect demos and stuff I was being sent for my zine at the time. It was a different time. I don’t want to sound like Mr negative, I like some new stuff but I find most of the production is all the same, there is no individuality left really. I seem to like bands who just rip off the greats and add something new to it. At least it’s honest. The new deathcore bands suck, almost laughable really. One breakdown 54 times that was done better in 1987. Pastel girly logos on t-shirts, which are only good to sell 14-year-old girls with big tits… Funny looking kids too, like weird wrestlers and jocks with vintage shirts and beards. Tech metal is just guys jerking off on pro tools and trying to be cool by adding 18267 sequences to the songs, it’s lame. Atheist and Watchtower did it better.
Look what happened to Dillinger Escape Plan. They came out and before they could even blow up, 2835 bands ripped them off so bad, they couldn’t even get out of the gate really, though they have their place it ruined the overall idea of that band. At the same time, some of these older guys should pack it up and go home, you’re ruining the name of your band. They think because there is a whole thrash resurgence that their lame band will sound better 20 years later. Christian metalcore? Don’t get me started.

SS: Will Coffin Syrup be released on vinyl? What do you think of vinyl being a strong seller these days, especially in the underground?
G: Well Coffin Syrup will be only on CD, the new Supercoven album I am working on the vinyl aspect of it now. I would love to do 180 gram, but that’s becoming very expensive, we will see. Actually, I think in underground hip hop, vinyl is hurting now more than ever, even Fat Beats closed down and they were the biggest shop in NY. It doesn’t look good really for the future, but there will always be a demand for a record. It looks cooler, it sounds cooler… You can enjoy the artwork properly and totally understand the concept of the record. It also helps to roll weed too.
SS: Do you still listen to newer hip hop? What do you think of it?
G: It depends really. The new stuff is a mockery really. It’s just a bunch of dudes running around bragging how much drugs they sell and how many chains they have… It’s almost a disrespect to the music but at least it’s honest. I respect any drug dealer over some schmuck that makes $5.25 an hour and is content to stay that way. If you’re fucking the system, I’m game. At the same time, I don’t need to listen to rehashed material and artists and ideas that were perfected by like Non Phixion, Sunz Of Man, Company Flow, R.A and Cage, and Jedi Mind Tricks. If I want to listen to them I will go put on their records. I like shit here and there though but it’s mostly for the wrong reasons. Check out LIL Boosie… He wears a H Lecter mask and has killed like 6 or 7 people he’s in jail now…
SS: Did you ever hang out with Uncle Howie (RIP)? Any memories of him
G: I’ve known Howie since 1986. When I met him he was addicted to crack and heroin. I have many memories, some are personal. I think he is def one of the most self-hating and self-destructive people I’ve ever met. I never felt he had peace in his life even though he had people who loved him. He was in rehab 10 times and it rarely worked.

I was the one who decided we should have a record label named after him, as I didn’t think he was going to live at all. I used to watch him smoke crack when I was like 12, or 13 and he would be so fucking high he would fall through the glass coffee tables in the living room, astonishing. Later on, we tried to make him feel good about things, like music but he never really got it due to his illness. He did know people cared for him though, and I do regret I didn’t say goodbye to him but I did want to go to his funeral and was advised it wouldn’t be a “good look”, due to what was happening with the group. If I didn’t suggest that Uncle Howie be named a label, it never would’ve happened. So I guess that was my little dedication to him, even before he died since I knew he was in bad shape for years.
SS: What is on your current playlist?
G: I listen to a lot of different stuff but now I’d say mmm
Cough, Ghost, Unearthly Trance, Tony Yayo, old Sepultura, Uncanny, Repugnance, Supersister, Acid Bath, Stark Reality, Dodsferd, Accept, Carbonized, Dissecting Table, Maiden, Sunz Of Man, Shabazz, Grief, the first Darkthrone album, shit..the list is too long
SS: Bongs pipes or J’s which do you prefer and why?
G: Blunts usually.., They still kick you in the face harder than anything. Once in a while if I’m in the mood I’ll go for bongs or a fancy hookah, I’m now into the Blue Dream/Sour Kush strain… Joints are for girls who only smoke on the weekends. I am currently looking for some high-grade pure yellow sunshine Acid.
